FastJobs is a renowned job site specialising in non-executive positions. It caters to both job seekers and employers, with a particular focus on part-time and temporary jobs.
In 2019, I was the sole Product Designer for this project. I worked closely with the colleagues at FastJobs. Our main goal was to reduce friction during job applications, primarily targeting the elderly and non-tech savvy individuals.
Elderly often struggle with the end-to-end job application process. Many find it difficult to register on job posting platforms, with some abandoning the process due to its complexity. This pattern is also observed among those who are not tech-savvy.
They often depend on assistance from family members or friends to navigate the job application process. Another common challenge is writing a CV, which some resist due to the perceived hassle of creating one.
What if we eliminate the prerequisite steps, thus simplifying the overall job application process? How can we ensure that the necessary details are still captured afterward?
In a quantitative survey among the elderly, we found that WhatsApp and SMS are their preferred text messaging platforms due to the simplicity. These platforms make it easy for them to connect with family members without the need for complex interactions.
Drawing inspiration from this, we ideate the flow that allow job applications to be sent to employers via either WhatsApp or SMS. The system checks if WhatsApp is available for the submitted phone number. If not, the job application interest will be sent as an SMS instead.
The employers will collect further details if the applicant passes the screening stage.
Given the two-month timeframe to realize the kiosk experience, we adopted an iterative design approach for continuous improvement.
Accessibility is crucial for this project, so we prioritized readability and ensured the contrast met WCAG AA and AAA standards.
As of 2021, we have deployed more than 20 kiosks in high-traffic public spaces such as community centres and roadshows. Volunteers are on site to assist job applicants in using the kiosks. Since the launch in 2019, over 3,000 jobs have been applied for and filled from elderly applicants.
